I wonder why is it that we are psychologically hardwired to question a woman’s modesty whenever she tries to make herself be heard. A sandstorm of misogynistic comments is hurled at her and she is shunned down by the patriarchal forces. A similar situation is currently being woven in the country. I’m sure most of us are aware of the ongoing Tanushree Dutta’s allegations against Nana Patekar for harassing her on the sets of Horn ‘OK’ Pleassss while they were shooting for a song. For those of you who aren’t aware, here’s what happened.

This is what Dutta said in her interview:

She told Zoom, “Everyone knows about Nana Patekar that he has always been disrespectful towards women. People in the industry know about his background… that he has beaten actresses, he has molested them, his behaviour with women has always been crude but no publication has printed anything about it.”

Here’s how the internet counter-attacked.

As soon as the actress dropped the bomb, the internet exploded with a backlash of negative comments. Dutta’s genuineness in the whole issue is being questioned because the incident took place a decade ago. People have already started concluding that it is an attention seeking attempt and her allegations are fabricated. The fault-findings are pouring in, mostly because Nana Patekar is a celebrated actor and is idolized for his contribution to the Indian cinema. His fans aren’t able to bear with the accusations pitched against him. They are profusely pointing out at the timeline of the abuse and are painting an unsporting image of the actress.

What people are missing out on…..

There is evidence that the actress tried to bring the issue to light ten years ago too. She was branded as ‘unprofessional’, her car was vandalized and she had to bid goodbye to the project.

Janice Sequeira, anchor of the famous talk show- Social Media Star vividly came out in support of Dutta. She said that she is a witness to the incident and fully favours the actress’s concern. Janice showed her support by posting a twitter thread giving out detailed information about what happened that day on the set.

Here’s the complete thread:

Here’s how veteran actor Nana Patekar reacted on the allegations.

Nana Patekar has responded to the allegations by saying ‘What does she mean by sexual harassment? We were on the set and there were 50-100 people sitting in front of us.’ He further added that he is considering taking legal actions against the actress and that the controversy won’t be a hindrance to his life and he will continue to do what he has been doing.

According to the actress, few others were also party to the harassment.

There are a few other popular names on which Dutta has pinned the blame. One of which is Ganesh Acharya, the choreographer of the song in which Nana Patekar is said to have demanded unwelcoming advances such as incorporation of intimate dance steps. Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri is also accused of inappropriate sexual innuendo.

Celebrities’ hands down support to the actress.

Many celebrities from the film industry are speaking in favour of the actress. Here are some of them-

Priyanka Chopra

Farhan Akhtar

Twinkle Khanna

Anurag Kashyap

Raveena Tandon

Pooja Bhatt

Renuka Sahne

“Tanushree made it clear that she was uncomfortable with a certain step in the dance and did not like Nana’s gesture/touch during that step. Even if Nana’s intentions might not have been to molest her, couldn’t he, the director and the choreographer come up with a step that made her feel comfortable? Is the work place meant for terrorizing people or about working in a healthy atmosphere? Would the film have suffered earth shatteringly if the steps were changed so that an actor felt more comfortable?” Renuka Shahane wrote.

A displeased Dutta responded to the celebs-

Dutta responded to Priyanka Chopra who referred to her as a ‘survivor’ in her tweet by saying “Well, it’s amazing. She has finally decided to join the bandwagon. It’s probably a smart thing to do at this point of time. But I just want people to know that I am not going to be reduced to a survivor. I have a name, I have a story and I have this truth that I am trying to get out because it’s not for me but for people who will come forward in the generations to come.”

She was happy that Twinkle Khanna has lent support to her but said that she is taken aback by the fact that her husband, Akshay Kumar is still working with Nana Patekar in Sajid Khan’s Housefull 4.

In one of the interviews, Amitabh Bachchan was asked to comment on this issue, to which his reply was: “Neither is my name Tanushree Dutta nor Nana Patekar”.

Dutta lashed out at Bachchan by saying that “I’m hurt, as these are people who do movies on social causes. They play roles in films and the audience applauds. But when it comes to standing up and doing something about what is happening in front of you, there are these evasive statements that don’t make sense.”

It is not new that women in nearly every industry do more damage to their career by speaking up against harassment than burying it in the sand. In a victim shaming society like ours, speaking up is a self-injury and the price paid in return is a seized career. But it feels like Bollywood is bracing itself for its #MeToo movement and Dutta has planted the ‘Weinstein effect’ in the industry. Apart from Dutta, actresses such as Radhika Apte, Richa Chadda, Swara Bhaskar and Konkana Sen Sharma have spoken about workplace harassment in the past but haven’t revealed names.

Bollywood needs to take a closer look in the way it functions and should not let the powerful men with inappropriate conduct jiggle away. Onlookers need to exercise their wheel of thinking and shouldn’t be driven by cognitive choices. At this stage of the controversy, taking sides doesn’t make sense but being sensitive towards a woman’s intentions to speak for herself totally does. We are hopeful that the revival of this issue after a decade would put sexism in Bollywood to an end or at least, become the wave of change.

We love watching movies, don’t we? Or else why the Indian film industry would be releasing close to 700 films a year! So far, 2018 has been really exciting with Bollywood film releases. After a prolonged controversy, we saw the spectacular success of Padmavat at the year beginning and then we were treated with Sonu Ke Titu ki Sweety.
While Dhadak, was heavily criticized for being a poor remake of the original Marathi film- Sairat, Raazi made our jaws drop with an applaudable storyline. The drama packed Sanju instantly garnered praises countrywide and didn’t leave a dry eye. Much awaited Veere Di Wedding missed the mark and audiences were left disappointed but Gold, the sports drama film on the other hand, delivered great performances.
We have listed below upcoming Bollywood movies to watch out for and we assure you that they are set to blow your mind away!

1. The Queen of Bollywood as the Queen of Jhansi!

This is an epic biographical film based on the life of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi and who better to play the titular role than B-town’s favourite rebel Kangana Ranaut. This is the first time Kangana will be donning a historical character. The film casts Sonu Sood, Atul Kulkarni, Suresh Oberoi and Ankita Lokhande (Pavitra Rishta fame). Ever since the first look of the movie has been revealed, it has set eyeballs rolling!

2. The Yash Raj comedy-drama we can’t wait for!

Starring Varun Dhawan as a tailor and Anushka Sharma as an embroider; the film is an intriguing small-town tale in the heart of India. It is being directed by Sharat Katariya and it is said that Varun and Anushka learnt to sew and embroider, and to operate the sewing machine to justify their characters. We just can’t wait to see the two actors surprise us as a small town couple.

3. This one is definitely going to make us nostalgic!

Even after eleven years, if Namastey London airs on television, we do not change the channel. Such is the magic of the 2007 romantic flick that starred Akshay Kumar as ‘Arjun’ and Katrina Kaif as ‘Jazz’. We are in full hope that the sequel of the movie starring Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra will create the same magic on the silver screens.

4. When three talented actors come together for a movie, we can expect a powerhouse film!

The film lines a promising star cast comprising – Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Yami Gautam as the lead actors supported by Anupam Kher and Divyendu Sharma. Despite engaging in a number of controversies before its release, Batti Gul, Meter Chalu is being eagerly awaited by fans.

5. Undoubtedly, this is going to be SRK’s gift to his fans!

Zero is a Sci-Fi romantic drama film that has a sporting star cast including Shah Rukh Khan as a 3-4 foot stature physically challenged man, Katrina Kaif as an alcoholic superstar and Anushka Sharma as an intellectually impaired scientist. After the successful Jab Tak Hai Jaan, this is the trio’s second collaboration. The film will incorporate imaginative concepts and advanced technologies inspired by Hollywood films. Promising actors Abhay Deol and Tigmanshu Dhulia will amplify the level of performances in the film. Zero will also be the last film appearance of late Superstar Sridevi. Our level of excitement has already skyrocketed after the film dropped its EID teaser and with so much in store, we are hooked to its release!

6. Can anyone not be excited for a Thalaiva film?

With a whooping budget of 550Cr, we can only imagine the grandeur of the film! We can look forward to audiences jumping on their seats in amazement with 2.0, as the Sci-Fi action thriller is said to be a brain-bashing visual experience directed by S.Shankar. The film has Amy Jackson as the female lead. Ever since the character poster of Akshay Kumar was released, it is being awaited with high anticipation.

7. All eyes on this political drama!

The first poster of the film itself has been so overwhelming that we just cannot stop ourselves from talking about the ensemble cast and their astonishing get-up. The film is based on 2014 memoir by Indian policy analyst Sanjay Baru- The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh. Actor Anupam Kher is portraying the character of Dr.Manmohan Singh, Akshay Khanna has been roped in as Sanjay Baru, Suzanne Bernert will portray Sonia Gandhi and Aahana Kumar will be impersonating Priyanka Gandhi in the film. After looking at this intriguing cast, we can’t stay calm!

8. Baba meets the action master Rohit Shetty!

One thing is for sure that we will be bidding adieu to this year on a high note. With Simmba coming to theatres at the year-end, we can’t wait to see Baba as a fierce cop in the Rohit Shetty film. The film will also be Saif’s daughter Sara Ali Khan’s debut into Bollywood. With Rohit Shetty and Ranveer Singh packaged in a film, the film guarantees to be an entertainment explosion!

So, these are the movies that should find a place in your calendar now. There is a lot to hope for with so many movies yet to release. While some will obviously let us down, some will surely be mind-twisting surprises.

We are a country of diverse cultures and far too many celebrations. Indian films have always used these celebrations as an effective part of their storytelling. And, there is no denial that out of the long list of festivals, Ganeshotsav is every filmmaker’s favorite. We believe it is mainly so because of the exuberant energy and colorful mood associated with the festivities. Also because the festival is celebrated with grandeur in Bollywood’s home- Mumbai!

Here’s a list of Bollywood movies that had the most powerful Ganeshotsav celebration scenes:-

1. Grand song sequence ‘Deva Shree Ganesha’

The fast-paced devotional song beautifully captures the spirit of the people during the festival. It is also a very dramatic scene in the movie as the first half of the song we get to see Hrithik Roshan’s character performing aarti to a 35feet huge Ganesh statue and in the second half of the song, there is a killing happening. The song is used worldwide by dancers for Ganesh Vandana.

2. The film begins and ends with the festival

The film entices all kinds of the audience with a norm-breaking story and has dark comic treatment. The story focuses on their trials and tribulations of the five central characters as they battle life in the city of Mumbai during the period of the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. The gangsters in the movie who traumatize one of the characters named Abhay in the film eventually end up being shot by their own bullets on the day of Ganesh Visarjan.

3. Salman Khan’s song ‘Tera Hi Jalwa’ was an instant hit

When Salman dances to a song; it’s in itself a celebration for his fans. Hence, Salman dancing to a festival song was a rampant success and people started foot-tapping every time the song played.

4. SRK’s entry in the film is during the Ganeshotsav Celebrations

The remake of the 1978 film gave King Khan his first Ganesh song. The song was an immediate addition to the festive songs list amidst the audience. The high-end action drama film shows Ganesh Pooja and the electrifying atmosphere that prevails during the festival.

5. The film ends with the villain’s murder during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at a beach

The war between the protagonist and the antagonist in the Ram Gopal Verma crime thriller is put to an end with Satya stabbing the Mafia Don while he offers prayers to Lord Ganesha during the larger than life celebrations.

6. The main twist in the film is during Ganesh Visarjan ceremony

The hilarious plot of the film is based on a Mumbai settled couple whose life takes a major turn when a distant relative suddenly drops by and starts interfering in their personal and professional lives. The film takes a major turn when the uninvited relative (played by Paresh Rawal) goes missing during the ceremonial Ganpati Visarjan.

7. This film taught us how to celebrate Ganeshotsav in Bollywood style!

With fervent Marathi flavor, the dance drama film enthralls the audience with the powerhouse performance by actors on the song ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’. The sheer choice of unconventional treatment of the song leaves the audience mesmerized with festive feels.

So, these were some of the most influential scenes from Bollywood that depicted Ganeshotsav celebrations in full vigor and grandeur.

Most of us grew up watching TV shows like Zee Horror show and Aahat on Zee Tv and Sony. We’re literally too used to being disappointed in horror produced in the Indian entertainment industry. There are a few exceptions like Urmila Matondkar starer Bhoot and Raaz (only the first part though) but now we have a new benchmark. Starring Radhika Apte and jointly-produced by Jason Blum and Anurag Kashyap, the Netflix original – Ghoul, is the show that every horror lover must watch. Here are 10 reasons why Ghoul is exactly what Indian TV shows really needed.

1. Tackles Social Change and Religious Fanaticism

In the very first episode, the miniseries raises issues pertaining to sectarianism in a dystopia. The society is divided and ruled by a totalitarian regime which has no place for religion and religious propaganda. It is also suggested that the state has curbed all voices of dissent and resistance. This is something that has barely been touched by mainstream narratives in the Indian TV scene. Ghoul takes the social change to a completely different level by uniting people on the grounds of nationalism and it highlights the macabre nature of such a society.

2. Political undertones, suggestions and reactions

Ghoul depicts a dystopia ruled by a military regime and also shows the darkness that paints the political scenario. It suggests how the defenders of democracy end up becoming like the very same fanatics that they were rose up against. Characters like Colonel Dacunha (Manav Kaul) and Laxmi Das (Ratnabali Bhattacharjee)  are blinded by the regime’s propaganda and the power granted by their military ranks. Dacunha is a decorated soldier with an illustrious character, but as the narrative progresses we see the darker side his heroism. It also suggests that due to his past achievements he suffers from a hero-complex which is highlighted by the fact that he took pleasure in beating and raping his own wife as she does not consent to his sexual approaches. Nida Rahim’s (Radhika Apte) father is shown as a progressive individual with views that are subversive in the state’s eyes. He tries to teach the correct history and religious teachings to his students and is sent to prison for interrogation and rehabilitation, but instead, he is shot in the head for his dissenting voice and actions.

3. Dark, mystical, and subversive-urban setting

The mini-series opens with an army team raiding an abandoned shopping mall where terrorists have set up a base. They are informed that a certain high profile terrorist, Ali Saeed had taken refuge in the mall. The typically urban setting of the scene sets the tone of the show and the subversive nature of depicting a tormented member of the society who has fallen prey to religious fanaticism as a reactionary dissent against the totalitarian regime. The mystery set in immediately and it only gets darker as the plot moves ahead.

4. Powerful female archetype – Nida Rahman

We’ve barely had powerful female characters in the lead in Indian shows. Also, most Indian TV shows are full of sexist ideas and depiction, with female characters usually being depicted as vamps or damsels. Ghoul subverts the idea of weak female characters that have been prevalent in Indian TV shows. Nida Rahim is shown as a hardcore nationalist who has been indoctrinated with the state’s ideas and put into the military regime’s interrogation unit. Nida is depicted as a religious Muslim but she has no sympathy towards the Muslim terrorists in prison. The show highlights the empathy in her when she gives a blanket to one of the prisoners and how she protects another prisoner since as finds out about his innocence. Nida takes on her superiors and fights for what is right and does not follow orders blindly. She is definitely one of the most powerful characters, that we have ever seen in any Indian show.

5. Incorporating Islamic mythology into the core of the plot

A ghoul is a demon or monster originating in the pre-Islamic mythos and is depicted as a flesh-eating, shape-shifting entity. In Islamic mythology, a ghūl is portrayed as a fiend-like djinn, and Iblis is said to have dominion over them. The term has often been used for an undead monster which takes on the appearance of the last human that it consumes. The show builds upon the element of horror and the demonic character is derived from the mythical ghūl. We’ve never seen such a macabre representation of any demon or spirit in Bollywood productions in the past, as we see in Ghoul. Most of the horror films and shows fail because of their lack of mystery, inefficient makeup and grossly underwhelming action and acting. This is where Ghoul shines and outdoes every other mainstream Indian horror film/show.

6. Great visual representation, dramatic jump scares and VFX

Ghoul delivers exactly what the Indian horror scene needs; an uncanny and formidable fiend/ghost/spirit, powerful performances, perfect makeup and blood, unashamed gore and body horror. The show’s visual representation of a dark dystopia is simply perfect. Most of the action takes place in Meghdoot 31, a secret nuclear bunker turned prison to hold the most dangerous criminals. The underground bunker also acts as a metaphor for the society that is repressed and covered up by the totalitarian regime. The scenes in which the ghūl is shown are executed with utmost perfection and the makeup is on point. Its jump scares are few, but they are intensely effective; get ready for some bone-chilling scenes of gore and horror if you have not watched Ghoul yet.

7. Intense action, mystery and psychological horror

The secret facility where most of the action takes place has a macabre tone to it. It is an unsettling place with no windows or natural light it can only be accessed by a single door. Ghoul develops and intensifies the mystery surrounding the terrorist Ali Saeed, (Mahesh Balraj) as he is brought into Meghdoot 31 for interrogation. The flawless acting and expressions on the demonic spirit’s face are executed brilliantly and it might be really scary if you have a weak heart (you’ve been warned).

8. The degradation of human psychology in isolation

Isolation can turn a person completely insane and Ghoul shows exactly this. The army officials in the secret facility are portrayed as dark individuals who’s psychological conditions are shaped by their past actions. Being soldiers and interrogators, they have had a dark past because of their job. Some have killed innocent people, some are shown as power-hungry megalomaniacs with a hero-complex. The isolation brings out the darkness in them and intensifies the element of psychological horror.

9. Compelling cinematography and a very slick sound design

Most of the action in the show takes place in the secret underground facility, that is mostly dark. Even the other scenes in which characters are introduced take place in the night. The very first scene is set in the wee hours of the night in an abandoned mall with no electricity. The camera-work is commendable and the cinematography is brilliant. Ghoul delivers intense gore, that is paralleled with an amazing sound design, great makeup and amazing acting. Some of the scenes are executed with awesome close-ups and honest representation of blood and damage to the physical bodies. In short, Ghoul is an amazing show with great production value.

10. THE QUEEN – Radhika Apte

Do we really need to tell you why?

Ghoul is a gripping tale with great set and sound designs, strong characters and compelling performances, political thriller and psychological horror. The show is exactly what the Indian horror scene needed. I feel it is the new benchmark for future productions. What do you think? Let’s discuss the show and its awesomeness in the comments below.

PS: Happy Birthday Radhika!

Movies are home to entertainment in India and its impact can be easily witnessed in the daily life and culture of the citizens. Bollywood movies have unmatched drama adorned with songs and dances and for several decades movies have made our lives a lot more colorful. Movies fuel us with all types of emotions, even the ones we didn’t know resides in us. Such is the power of the visual medium!
Without fail, Bollywood has given us evergreen dialogues that are ingrained in our minds forever. Be it Rajesh Khanna’s “Pushpa I hate tears”, Dharmender Paaji’s “Kutte Kameene Mein Tera Khoon Pi Jaunga” or Dilip Kumar’s “Kaun kambakht bardaasht karne ko peeta hai? Mein toh peeta hoon ke bas saans le saku”. Through this article, we take you on a ride to all the famous B-wood dialogues that evoked the patriotic in us and continue to do so, every time we hear them. Here we go!

1. Thus speaks every Indian but when Sunny Paaji speaks, presence is felt!

The intensity with which Sunny Paaji explodes on screen can hardly be matched by anyone. His hard-hitting dialogue delivery and brooding performance is bound to bring out the patriotic devotion in us and with a dialogue like the above that talks about India’s vividness, how can we not feel proud of the land we come from?

2.Indian Army and their patriotism is totally heroic!

Our soldiers are the pride and honor of our nation. The dialogue beautifully throws light on the selfless-service and loyalty of the soldiers towards the welfare of the nation.

3.Tum doodh mangoge hum kheer denge…….that’s all one has to say! Instinctively, you will say the rest.

India’s Kashmir war is a never-ending tale and has created stressful situations in the country. It is a highly sensitive issue and the Indian Army has suffered the loss of so many Jawans because of this issue. This dialogue had spread like wild-fire when the film released as the Kashmir conflict has always stirred up Indian sentiments.

4.We bet this scene never leaves a dry eye.

One of the most spine-chilling patriotic scenes in the history of Indian cinema! Nana Patekar’s originality in this scene is nothing less than heart-wrenching.

5. We have to admit that we never switch the channel if this scene is playing.

The unforgettable reply of Akshay Kumar’s character ‘Arjun’ to the British man disparaging India as the land of snake charmers in the movie impressed each one of us and made us feel extremely proud of the country we live in. India is a land where every religion finds its home!

6. We sleep in peace because somebody is awake at the border!

Unquestionably, the will and commitment of our soldiers to protect the nation from any kind of threat is what results in harmony. Thousands suffer and bear deep wounds and scars and sacrifice their lives at the border to render us peaceful sleep at nights.

7. This iconic movie has a number of memorable dialogues.

This dialogue beautifully pens down the unrelenting devotion of our soldiers and their absolute loyalty towards the service of the nation.

8. When SRK says it, a million hearts frisk and frolic!

9. Rustom giving us a clear picture of the pride and glory attached to a uniform.

The dialogue gives us an insight into the sacred obligation of a soldier towards his/her uniform.

10.Very filmy! Yet igniting our bones with patriotic sentiments.

Cricket is not a sport but a religion in India and that has been best used in this dialogue. Two things that Indians have a hard time dealing with, one is nursing a heartbreak after India loses a cricket match and secondly, swollen anger on being attacked by perpetrators.

11. Dalbir Kaur’s fight for justice was nothing less than a tropical storm.

Despite having one of the most powerful militaries in the world, India has never misused its power and has never planned an attack from the back and that’s what the dialogue highlights!

12. And the dialogue that drove the nation cray!

This movie is a patriotic bonanza and keeps us clenched in its fist from the start to the end. 12 years since the release of this movie and it is still as fresh as ever! This dialogue grabs us by our soul and takes us on the other side of the road and shows us a bigger picture as we judge and criticize the apathy of the nation!

These dialogues from Bollywood movies are bound to make a person emotional and patriotic who honors the tricolor flag. India has been through a very rough patch with its struggle for independence for several years and thousands of freedom fighters and public lost their lives so that we can walk freely today! Had it not been their unwavering efforts, it is possible that we would be fighting for our freedom till date! Hence, it is only with our love and support that India can progress to greater heights.

Sridevi was not just an actor. She was and will continue to be an inspiration for generations of actors with her undying on-screen charisma and unparalleled acting talent. She led the industry for decades and ruled the hearts of countless fans and admirers through the ages. Her charm was such that it made her the show-stopper wherever she went. Her benign aura touched the hearts of millions around the world. On her birth-anniversary, we’d like to share 10 Reason Why Sridevi Was The Real Queen of Bollywood.

1. Because, Bollywood > Hollywood

At the peak of her career in Bollywood, Steven Spielberg approached Sridevi for a role in Jurassic Park. She had to decline due to her busy schedule much to the disappointment of the director and anticipating fans.

2. Sridevi was the real MVP

In 1976, Sridevi played the role of Rajinikanth’s stepmother in the Tamil film Moondru Mudichu. She was barely 13 years old. In addition, she was paid more than the male-lead (Rajinikanth) for this role; a rare phenomenon, not only in the film industry but also in general.

3. So many titles – so many accolades

Sridevi was showered with the titles – ‘Bollywood’s First Female Superstar ‘and ‘Lady Bachchan’. She was the highest-paid Bollywood actor between 1985 and 1992. At her peak, she was the reason why most of those movies worked.

4. A career spanning 5 decades

Having gained the title of Bollywood’s first female superstar, Sridevi’s career saw an unparalleled and steady graph. With over 300 films under her belt, through nearly 5 decades Sridevi’s career had already become a sort of a legend in the industry.

5. Because Filmfares and IIFAs are too mainstream

In 2013, Sridevi was honoured with the fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri from the Government of India. The then President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee presented her with the award at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

6. Languages were never a barrier for our Queen

Being fluent in Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam, and later on in Hindi Sridevi’s career was full of successful films, which include countless superhits in the South Indian film industries. Sridevi and Kamal Hasan have appeared together in 27 films including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi.

7. A dedicated damsel, not in distress

It is said that it was Sridevi’s dedication towards her work that led her to new zeniths of success. Despite having recorded a very high fever (103 degrees), she finished the shoot for the rain-dance song Na Jaane Kaha Se Aayi (Chaalbaaz) alongside Sunny Deol.

8. She started without her own voice

Sridevi climbed the stairs to stardom, as soon as she debuted in Bollywood. The funny thing was Sridevi did not dub her own dialogues. It is said that she was not very proficient in the language. Veteran actors Naaz and Rekha were the ones who dubbed for a lot of Sridevi’s films. She first dubbed her dialogues in 1989 for the film Chandni.

9. They did it before Raj and Simran made it cool

Through the 1980s and the 1990s, Sridevi and Anil Kapoor were one of the most loved on-screen couples (they were almost as big as Kajol and SRK). The two starred in 13 films together and delivered some of their best performances which include the likes of Mr India, Lamhe, Laadla, and Judaai.

10. “What’s in a name?” after all

Sridevi actually spelled her name as Sreedevi, and it was a typo on the dircetor’s part that her was spelt as Sridevi. But, being the cool-queen that she was, she never really bothered to have it corrected, because “What’s in a name?” after all. By the way her real name was Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan.

Miss Hawa Hawaii and her evergreen charm will be dearly missed by all of us. Her legacy will live on and undoubtedly resonate with the coming generations too. Shah Rukh Khan’s film, Zero (2018) will be Sridevi’s final on-screen appearance. The film is expected to hit the silver screens by the end of the year (expected release date 21st Dec). Let us know how much you miss the Queen in the comments section.

It only seems like yesterday when the trailers of films like Jodhaa Akbar, Ghajini, Rab Ney Bana Di Jodi and Rock On!! hit our television screens and we looked forward to their release with great enthusiasm and excitement. This was back in 2008, and it has been 10 years since. We, ourselves can’t believe that it has been over a decade since we watched these films in the theatres. Here is a list of 10 Bollywood Films that are turning 10 in 2018.

1. Jodhaa Akbar

Jodhaa and Akbar will probably be remembered more than Salim and Anarkali

Ashutosh Gowariker’s historical drama, set in the backdrop of the Mughal Empire centred around the love story between Emperor Akbar (Hrithik Roshan) and Jodhaa (Aishwarya Rai). The Mughal empire wanted to take over the throne of Amer, and in a move to make peace, Raja Bharmal of Amer offered Jodhaa’s hand in marriage to the emperor Akbar. The story revolves around how Jodha and Akbar fall in love with each other.

2. A Wednesday!

A Wednesday! proves, that you don’t need glam and glitter to make a good film

A low budget thriller, A Wednesday! grasped the attention of both critics and viewers. It stars Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher in the lead roles. The acting is flawless and the twist at the end of the movie is totally worth it. There have been several remakes of the film with the most famous ones being Kamal Hassan’s Eeenadu (in Telegu) and Ben Kingsley’s A Common Man.

3. Ghajini

Ghajini is the kind of film that restores your faith in Bollywood

The Bollywood remake of the Nolan film Memento, Ghajini tracks the life and actions of Sanjay (Amir Khan) a retired businessman with short-term memory loss. Amir Khan’s flawless acting and six-pack abs were the centrepieces of this movie. Asin was cast opposite Amir Khan, and her character is murdered by the antagonist Ghajini. As the murder is committed, Ghajini also injures Sanjay leading to his memory disorder. The movie was a big hit and it has been remade into several regional language movies.

4. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

No one can romance better than our beloved King

Shahrukh Khan in a double role with Anushka Sharma playing his love interest, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a romantic comedy. Shahrukh plays a soft-spoken and simple office clerk while Anushka plays a bubbly modern girl. The two characters get married and Surinder (Shahrukh) notices that his wife Taani (Anushka) is not as happy with him as she should be. He decides to change his look, to seem cooler in order to win over Taani’s heart. They enter a dance competition as Raj (Surinder in disguise) and Taani, and eventually, they end up winning and falling in love.

5. Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na

Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na – How to get out of the Friendzone 101!

Imran Khan made his Bollywood debut with Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, a coming of age romantic comedy film. The story revolves around Aditi (Genelia D’souza) and Jai (Imran Khan), who are supposed best friends. Jai falls in love with another girl and Aditi tries to get married to someone else, but both of them realise that they are in love with each other and at the end, it all ends on a happy note. The story is engaging and the humour is on point, which makes Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na an enjoyable watch.

6. Singh is Kinng

A laughter riot is exactly what this film is

Akshay Kumar plays the role of Happy Singh, a simpleton who tries to help everyone in the village but ends up breaking everything that comes in his path. To rid the village of Happy’s problematic presence the villagers persuade him to go to Sydney and to try and bring back Lakhan Singh, a fellow villager who becomes an underworld don. With insane comic timing and a hilarious plot, Singh is Kinng is one those few comedy films that can be watched over and over again.

7. Rock On!!!

We’re sure you remember the lyrics to every song in the film

With Farhan Akhtar and Arjun Rampal in the lead, with Purav Kohli and Luke Kenny as members of the rock band called Magic. Set in the late 90’s and early 2000s Rock On!! is a musical drama film that traces the ups and downs of the band, Magik, and its members. The songs in this film are still heard at parties and find their places in many of our personal playlists. It also introduced us to Farhan Akhtar’s husky singing which seems to have won hearts around the world.

8. Fashion

Fashion was literally the show stopper of the year 2008

Priyanka Chopra plays the role of a small-town girl turned supermodel in Fashion. Directed and produced by Madhur Bhandarkar, Fashion is a strong commentary on the modelling industry. The story revolves around the characters played by PC, Kangana Ranaut and Mughda Godse. It shows the dark underbelly of the industry which is filled with lies, drugs and sexual harassment. The film was a success at the Box Office and managed to gather positive reviews from both critics and the viewers.

9. Dostana

For a change, Bollywood did not disappoint

The first mainstream Indian film to be centred around the lives of two men who pose as homosexuals while looking for an apartment in Miami. Abhishek Bachchan (Sam) and John Abraham (Kunal) are in the lead, with Priyanka Chopra (Neha). The story is simple but it takes a cliched turn towards the end with the two men, falling for the same girl, Neha. Dostana is one of the few Indian films which has openly talked about homosexuality and portrayed non-stereotypical images of homosexuals.

10. Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!

Lucky was probably the greatest robber in Bollywood

Abhay Deol’s National Award winning film Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! was inspired by the real-life shenanigans of Devinder Singh aka Aunty, a real-life super burglar from Delhi. Abhay plays the titular Lucky, a charismatic young man who robs people not out of need but for fun. The film recounts the thievery that Lucky commits in different cities around the country when he is finally apprehended at the hands of Devender Singh (Paresh Rawal) a special branch inspector. The film is very interesting and the robberies that Lucky commits are very creative and innovative. It is a must watch for all.

All said and done, these films are now 10 years old. Ten years seem like a long time, but we are certain that you were awed by the news of some of these films being ten years old. Let us know what you think of the list and other films from 2008 which have turned 10 years old this year.
