Pussy Riot Invades Pitch – Makes a statement against Russia

The FIFA World Cup final between France and Croatia was a roller coaster of emotions beginning with Mario Mandzukic’s own goal and ending with a 4-2 score. France secured its second World Cup victory while Croatia won millions of hearts with their spirit. But, there was another victory that was won on the same pitch, moments after the play was resumed at halftime.

The pussy riot clique

Four people, dressed in old police uniforms invaded the pitch and caused chaos to run amok in the pitch. The match had to be paused until they were removed by the security officials. About 17 hours ago, a Moscow based pro-feminist protest punk rock group, Pussy Riot’s official twitter handle posted a tweet claiming responsibility for the invasion.

Here’s what the tweet read “NEWS FLASH! Just a few minutes ago four Pussy Riot members performed in the FIFA World Cup final match — ”Policeman enters the Game”

Along with the tweet, Pussy Riot has also posted a photo that details the inspiration and reason for the pitch invasion, along with a list of demands to the Russian government.

The first video that was uploaded was taken down by YouTube on the grounds of copyright infringement. That has not deterred the band from fighting back and posting photos of the incident and re-uploading the video.

The invasion was staged in the presence of the Russian Premier Vladimir Putin to protest against the state and its repressive attitude towards its people. They invaded the pitch to make a statement about Russian political and prison systems. Pussy Riot’s pitch invasion demands included:
• Free political prisoners.
• Do not put people in jail for social media “likes”.
• Stop illegal detentions at political rallies.
• Allow political competition in Russia.
• Do not fabricate criminal cases and detain people for no reason.

It was reported by the Russian website Mediazona that the pitch invaders included three women and one man and all of them were reportedly detained at a police station nearby. One protester was able to run to the middle of the field and high five KylianMbappé, the 19-year-old soccer player who scored France’s fourth goal in the match against Croatia.

They may have been arrested and silenced, but we’ve already crossed the dawn of the digital age and it won’t be easy to stop the idea behind this protest invasion. The group’s demands are slowly but steadily resonating throughout Russia and the world. Here is the full video released by Pussy Riot on their YouTube channel wearepussyriot
