Benefits and disadvantages of working from home
It is probably safe to assume that, if given a choice, many would like to continue to work from home even after the pandemic passes. Some surveys show that the majority of workers would continue to work from home if possible, at least for part of the week. It is easy to understand why: no commutes, fewer distractions, and even higher productivity are just some of the benefits of having a flexible workplace.
Of course, there are also some drawbacks to working from home. Many live in small apartments that don’t have a suitable workspace or have a shared apartment. Furthermore, some employees report having a work from home burnout and feeling more lonely when they can’t meet their colleagues. That is why some companies have adopted a flexible remote work policy which allows the employees to come into the office whenever they choose.
Remote working is nothing new, and many companies embraced remote working long before the pandemic. GitLab, a public company with more than 1,300 employees, has been remote since its start in 2014. Other fully remote companies include Bandcamp, DuckDuck Go, Fiverr, and Upwork. For these companies, remote working has many benefits. They can be more flexible and can hire people from all over the globe. They also don’t have to pay for expensive offices, including rent, cleaning, parking, and utilities.
Is remote working the future?
The global crisis has made many companies re-evaluate their position on remote work, and some are contemplating work-from-home as a new norm. Should they wait for the pandemic to end and ask employees to come back to the office, or should they get rid of the office for good? The answer to this question is probably different from company to company. Some may choose to take the middle road and hire a smaller space and make coming into the office optional.
A long list of big-name companies have decided to go fully remote in light of the pandemic: Twitter, Coinbase, Slack, Ancestry.com, Capital One, and Shopify are just a few of the companies that have announced that they will allow employees to work from home indefinitely.
