2. Pineapple Express (2008)
This is the movie that cemented Seth Rogen’s stoner image. Onscreen he plays lowly process server Dale, who spends his days cruising around, serving court notices, and smoking weed.
After he inadvertently witnesses a murder, Dale and his dealer Saul, played by James Franco, are pulled into the criminal underworld. The movie focuses on their ongoing attempts to escape the situation they find themselves in.
Along the way are some hilarious encounters with characters such as Danny McBride’s Red, Saul’s unhinged, coke-addled supplier. Pineapple Express is easy-to-follow, laugh-out-loud funny, and an excellent movie to watch while high.
3. Inherent Vice (2014)
Adapted by Paul Thomas Anderson from a novel by Thomas Pynchon, Inherent Vice is a stoner noir-mystery movie. The incomparable Joaquin Phoenix plays the lead role of Larry “Doc” Sportello, a permanently stoned private eye living in 1970 L.A.
An ex-girlfriend’s visit sends Doc down a rabbit hole of crime and conspiracy. Think “Chinatown,” but with more weed. Doc fumbles his way through the movie in an amusing cloud of confusion and marijuana smoke. Phoenix makes the role his own, giving the character a real sense of authenticity.
Inherent Vice is carefully crafted, intentionally convoluted, and great fun. Figuring everything out isn’t necessary, simply relax, and enjoy the twists and turns of the story and Phoenix’s outstanding performance. A terrific late-night movie to watch while high.
4. This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
Rob Reiner’s directorial debut is a stomach-busting mockumentary starring Harry Shearer, Christopher Guest, and Michael McKean. Together, the trio forms the profoundly idiotic core of “Britain’s Loudest Band,” Spinal Tap.
The movie documents the band as they embark on an ill-fated tour of America. What follows is 82 minutes of puns, jokes, and poking fun at the ego of eighties metal bands. What’s even more impressive is that it’s primarily improvised, cut down from hours of material.
The musical numbers in Spinal Tap are another highlight. As ridiculous as songs like Sex Farm or Christmas With the Devil are, they’re often genuinely catchy and memorable. If you’re a music fan, this is the best movie to watch while high.
5. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
If crazy movies to watch high are what you’re looking for, you can’t go wrong with this one. 2001 is a thought-provoking, psychedelic sci-fi epic and a visual masterpiece.
The film is packed with spectacularly realistic shots of the solar system; all created without CGI. Moreover, this movie was released a year before the moon landings, making its accuracy all the more impressive.
Set in the far-flung future of 2001, Kubrick’s 1968 magnum opus details the discovery of a monolith on the moon. The alien artifact sends a signal toward Jupiter, prompting humanity to send an A.I.-augmented spacecraft to explore.
2001 is a genuine work of art; its unconventional storytelling and glacial pace aren’t for everyone. But if you like more arty, high-concept movies, pack a bowl, get comfy, and prepare for a unique cinematic experience.
6. Samsara (2011)
The last movie on the list is perfect when you’re too stoned to follow a complicated story but still want to watch something. Samsara is an experimental “documentary” entirely free from a narrative some call a nonverbal guided meditation.
Samsara presents a series of vignettes showing various aspects of the human experience from around the world. Sequences range from the beautiful to the bizarre, and it’s easy to get lost in the ever-changing imagery.
