Schindler’s List follows the story of one Oskar Schindler, who during the second world war attempts to save his Jewish employees from the Holocaust. The film was shot in black and white because Spielberg envisioned the look of a documentary for the film. The film was a critical as well as commercial success and earned several accolades, including Best Picture at the Academy Awards. After an alien is left behind on Earth, he is saved by a young boy named Eliot who hides him from everyone. With time, Eliot and his siblings form a bond with the alien, whom they name E.T. E.T. received overwhelmingly great response from critics as well as movie goers, and is regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time. It received several awards, including 4 Academy Awards.
3. Jaws
After a white shark terrorises the people living on a usually quiet island named Amity, a police chief, a marine scientist and a fisherman try to help them out. Jaws opened to positive reviews from critics as well as general audiences, and became a super hit. It was the highest grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars.
4. Jurassic Park
After an entrepreneur named John Hammond opens a fantasy park that contains clones of dinosaurs, it ends up attracting huge crowds. Based on the American President Abraham Lincoln, the movie follows his characters as he uses his powers to abolish slavery in the United States and reconcile his countrymen during the civil war. The movie received favourable reviews from critics who especially praised Daniel Day Lewis’s performance as Abraham Lincoln.
6. Bridge of Spies
An attorney named James B Donovan tries to defend an alleged KGB spy named Rudolf Abel in the court. He is then called upon to break a negotiation and exchange Rudolf with a US pilot, Francis Powers, caught in USSR. The movie upon its release received much critical acclaim, especially directed towards Spielberg’s direction and Tom Hanks’ performance. It was also a commercial success.
7. Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom
A group of poor villagers in India reach out to Indiana Jones, a legendary archeologist, asking him to retrieve an invaluable stone that has been stolen by an evil priest. The movie serves as a prequel to the 1981 movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Despite initial mixed reviews, the movie ended up doing a tremendous job at the box office.
8. Poltergeist
A family of five lives in their dream home happily – until the movie begins and everything goes to hell. The youngest member of the family, Carol, a five year old girl, suddenly starts speaking to sinister entities present in the house. Poltergeist was a majo critical and commercial success and is now regarded as a horror classic. It was followed by two sequels and a remake that release in 2015.
9. Saving Private Ryan
During the Normandy invasion in World War II, John Miller, a captain of the US army is tasked with finding Private James Ryan, three of whose brothers have already been martyred during the war. The movie is inspired by the real-life story of Niland brothers who did in fact serve in the army during the second world war. Saving Private Ryan received favourable reviews from critics and audiences, who were particularly impressed by Hanks’ performance.
10. The Post
Katherine, a first female publisher of a major newspaper, and her editor-in-chief Ben, decide to put their careers on stake in order to expose a scandalous secret about the American state’s involvement in the Vietnam War. The movie opened to favourable reviews by critics. Performances by the main cast were especially lauded.
