The fourth-largest railway network in the world, our railway system is constantly working on uplifting and updating the system for a better travel experience. Over the years, the introduction of high-speed rails has led to the constant trials of increasing the speed of the existing trains while introducing new and improved versions. 1. Vande Bharat Express
Max Speed: 180 km/hr, Avg Speed: 112 km/hr

First introduced in 2019, this is currently the fastest train in India. This engineless train is designed to run at a speed of 180-160 km/h and maintains an average speed of 112 km/h on the tracks. Train 18, or the Vande Bharat Express, has reduced the travel time by 4- 5 hours, which is a huge accomplishment. The train has 16 fully-equipped coaches with a Wi-Fi facility and GPS system to keep the track of stations. It also has bio-vacuum toilets, automatic doors, and security cameras. It is supposed to be the successor of the Shatabdi express and will soon replace its predecessor. This train was designed under the Make in India Initiative.

2. Tejas Express
Max Speed: 162 km/hr  Avg. Speed: 110 km/hr

This semi high-speed train has a maximum speed of 162 km/h and an average speed of 110 km/h. The train has three routes, Mumbai CST to Karmali Goa, New Delhi to Chandigarh, and Lucknow to Anand Vihar. The last two routes were briefly suspended in November 2020 due to the lack of passengers amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Although services were resumed in February. This train has executive chair cars with LCD screens, an attendant call button, and a USB charging point. It also has several vending machines, beverages, security cameras, and a baggage pick-up facility. They even went as far as offering remunerations to passengers for every hour that the train was delayed.

3. Gatimaan Express
Max Speed: 160 km/hr

This high-speed luxury train has a maximum speed of 160 km/h. It covers the 188 km distance between Delhi and Agra in just 100 minutes. It has several interesting features such as an automatic smoke alarm, emergency brake, free Wi-Fi, bio-toilets, two restaurants, train hosts, and hostesses.

4. New Delhi – Bhopal Shatabdi Express
Max Speed: 150 km/hr

The Shatabdi trains were first introduced in 1988 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. This particular train has a maximum speed of 150 km/h and it runs daily. It is one of the fastest trains in India that covers a distance of around 700 kilometers from Habibganj to New Delhi and back. It has 18 fully air-conditioned chair cars and meals are included in the travel fare.

5. Mumbai – New Delhi Rajdhani Express
Max Speed: 140 km/hr 

This train runs at a maximum speed of 140 km/h making it one of the fastest trains in India. It covers a distance of 1384 kilometers. It has 20 coaches. In the category of Rajdhani express trains, this train is the fastest. The Kanpur Reverse Shatabdi also has the same speed although it covers a distance of only 437 kilometers and was introduced to reduce the load of passengers on the Lucknow Shatabdi Express.

6. New Delhi – Howrah Rajdhani Express
Max Speed: 135 km/hr 

This train is one of the most popular trains running between Kolkata and New Delhi. It covers a distance of 1450 kilometers between the capital and the city of joy at a maximum speed of 135 km/h and an average speed of 85 km/h. This was one of the first trains in India to be fully air-conditioned and have Wi-Fi service. It acts as a link between many religious destinations such as Gaya and Allahabad.

7. Sealdah Duronto Express
Max Speed: 135 km/hr

This competitor of the Howrah Rajdhani Express also runs at a maximum speed of 135 km/h. It is popular for its characteristic yellow and green bodice that gives the train a beautiful look. it covers a distance of 1452 kilometers in less than 17 hours with only a few stops on the way. The train provides refreshments and meals owing to the huge distance that it covers.

8. H.Nizamuddin – Bandra Garib Rath
Max Speed: 130 km/hr

Also known as the Garib Rath Express, this fully air-conditioned train was first introduced to provide an affordable and comfortable travel experience to the passengers. Although the berths are narrower than most other trains, they have more berths and seating capacity than any other express train in India. It can achieve a maximum speed of 130 km/h, covering a distance of 1367 kilometers in just 16 hours while maintaining an average speed of 80 km/h.

9. Mumbai Central – Ahmedabad AC Double Decker Express
Max Speed: 130 km/hr

This unique double-decker train falls under the category of Shatabdi trains. It can achieve a maximum speed of 130 km/h and an average speed of 67 km/h. It is also the first train to endorse a brand in India, with its exteriors covered with vinyl wrappings featuring advertisements. Since it was first introduced in 2012, it has been running 6 days a week from Mumbai to Ahmedabad covering a distance of almost 500 kilometers.

10. Maharastra Sampark Kranti Express
Max Speed: 110 km/hr 

This bi-weekly train is one of the fastest trains in India that first started running in 2004. Running at a maximum speed of 110 km/h and only making 3 stops, it covers a distance of 1367 kilometers covering H.Nizamuddin (Delhi), Kota Junction, Vadodara Junction, Borivali, and Bandra Terminus.
