1. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2
The much-awaited sequel to the film that has almost achieved cult status in Bollywood, Bhul Bhulaiyaa 2 had Kartik Aryan play the psychiatrist this time, who tries to deal with the malicious spirit of Monjulika, who has returned.
2. Jersey
Starring Shahid Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur, and Pankaj Kapoor, this movie is a sports drama about a former cricketer who returns to the field to fulfill his son’s wish of buying a jersey t-shirt. The film is a remake of a 2019 Telugu film of the same name.
3. Thar
Taking inspiration from the Western genre of cinema, Thar is an action thriller set in the 1980s. The film stars Fatima Sana Shaikh, Harshvardhan Kapoor and Anil Kapoor, and it was released on Netflix on the 6th of May.
4. Looop Lapeta
With the amazing Taapsee Pannu as the lead actor, Looop Lapeta follows Savi as she tries to race against time to save her boyfriend once he misplaces a mobster’s money. The film has been directed by Aakash Bhatia and written by Bhatia and Vinay Chhawal.
5. Gangubai Kathiawadi
The film which became a raging sensation within days of its release, Gangubai Kathiawadi is a must-watch. With Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s trademark style of filmmaking and Alia Bhatt’s jaw-droppingly good performance, you’d be missing out if you don’t watch this film. The film raises a number of important questions, bringing them to the fore and starting a conversation that we as a society desperately need to have.
6. Badhaai Do
Starring Bhumi Pednekar, Rajkumar Rao, Gulshan Devaiah, and Sheeba Chaddha among others, this film deals with the rather sensitive topic of lavender marriages. Sumi and Shardul are two queer individuals who get married to each other to escape familial pressure; the film follows their story as they struggle to keep up their lies while leading their own secret lives. It has proved to be one of the best hindi movies on Netflix in 2022.
7. 83
The 1983 World Cup victory of the Indian cricket team is the event the film is set in. With Ranveer Singh playing Kapil Dev, the movie sure stirred nostalgia among millions of Indians who had borne witness to that game.
8. RRR
An action drama directed by S S Rajamouli, RRR was the film everyone was waiting for. Starring Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, and others, this one makes for a most enjoyable watch.
9. Beast (Raw)
This film is an action-comedy starring Vijay and Pooja Hegde, directed by Nelson. The plot deals with Veera Raghavan, a RAW agent, who has to rescue people trapped in a Chennai mall that is hijacked by terrorists.
10. Dasvi
Nimrat Kaur and Abhishek Bachchan star in this social comedy which tells the story of a politician who realises the value of education after being in prison. Watch this one for a refreshing change.
11. Sooryavanshi
A Rohit Shetty film starring Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Ranveer Singh, Ajay Devgn and others, Soryavanshi hit the headlines for a number of reasons. The film is an action drama showing an ATS chief embarking on a mission to locate missing ammunition and nab the perpetrators of the crime.
12. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui
With Vaani Kapoor and Ayushman Khurana in the lead, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui follows Manu and Maanvi as they fall in love, and all goes well until Manu learns of Maanvi’s gender identity. Watch to find out what happens next.
13. Doctor G
Ayushman Khurrana delivered to the audience’s expectations this year with yet another comedy drama. Doctor G is a genius film based on the stereotypes around men becoming gynaecologists and a few other important issues. Its character portrayal is very realistic which is a common theme in Ayushman’s movies.
14. Hit: The first case
A remake of the Telugu film of the same name, Hit: The first case is a suspense thriller starring Rajkumar Rao and Sanya Malhotra. As always, Rajkummar Rao has given a brilliant performance in the movie as a police officer suffering from PTSD who sets out to solve a case while fighting his own demons. The psychological element of the movie will keep you on the edge of your seat.
15. Darlings
Darlings is a satirical dark comedy with Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah and Vijay Varma. It touches on a delicate topic in a very interesting and engaging manner. You know a villain has played a really good role when you end up hating his guts by the end of the film. Vijay Varma has done exactly that. The duo of Alia Bhatt and Shefali Shah have also not fallen short in delivering performances par excellence. It is a personal favourite.
16. Goodbye
It is movie enough to make a grown man cry. It deals with death and grief and shows what a family goes through upon the death of their mother. The director found a very compassionate and stirring way to showcase the series of emotions that a person endures with the loss of a loved one.
17. Laal Singh Chaddha
Laal Singh Chaddha is the Hindi adaptation of the Hollywood film Forrest Gump. It revolves around a man with a low IQ, his journey in the army and his wish to be reunited with the love of his life, Rupa.
18. Qala
A Netflix original, Qala is a drama movie about human feelings of jealousy and the wish to be recognized. Qala Manjushree spends her entire life trying to gain her mother’s approval. She takes extreme steps in order to do so but in the end does she truly get what she wants? (PS; Don’t forget to check out the songs from this movie, you will not be disappointed.)
