10 Indian Brands That Are Rocking It Overseas

   

With the market population increasing by the day and the purchasing power of people on the rise, brands are no longer confined to their national borders. And of course, kudos to the broad base of Internet buying, the desi brands aren’t all that desi anymore. 

   

Swayed by the impact of globalisation, these brands have moved west and east and are not just surviving but are giving other brands a run for their money. Read on to know some of our Indian brands that are rocking it overseas just as much as they are in their homeland. 

It might even be a revelation for some, that these brands are Indian. 

1. Old Monk

Launched in 1954, India’s favourite drink, is owned by Mohan Meakin Limited. The drink is made in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Until recently, it was the most drunk dark rum in the world. This rum is sold by some retailers in a few countries that include Russia, United States, UK, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Canada,  Singapore and Malaysia.

 

2. Amul 

Formed in 1946, and managed by Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd., is owned by three million milk producers of Gujarat. It is the largest milk producer in the country. It was in the early 2000s that Amul stepped into the global market. Today you can find Amul Products in atleast 20 countries apart from India including USA, China, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

3.  MRF

The Madras Rubber Factory started out in the 1940s and is now a multi million company producing quality tyres used all across India and the world, along with a presence in paints, coats, toys, motorsports and cricket training.

4. Royal Enfield 

Royal Enfield’s Bullet enjoys the longest motorcycle production run of all time, making it one of the oldest running bikes of the world. It is produced in Chennai and is exported worldwide. Royal Enfield has around 900 stores in India and has expanded its global presence to 600 stores. This iconic brand has its presence in Australia, Europe, Canada, USA, Middle East, South East Asia and Latin America. 

5. Cafe Coffee Day 

This Indian cafe chain is owned by Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company. Café Coffee Day, or CCD, as it is commonly known, has almost 1534 outlets across 28 states of India. Foreign brands like Starbucks, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Costa Coffee and Gloria Jeans Coffees have not been able to stir this brand from its place.

   

6. Lakme 

Lakmé started out as a 100 per cent subsidiary of Tata Oil Mills, part of the Tata Group, but is now run by Hindustan Unilever. Lakmé is the current market leader in the Indian cosmetics market with a 17.7 per cent market share. This Indian cosmetic brand has a sizeable global footprint. 

7. Hidesign 

This high end leather accessories manufacturing company is based in Pondicherry.  Tamil Nadu’s tanneries supply leather products to some of the biggest brands worldwide. This brand has a good market outside India including countries like Germany, Australia, England, and USA. 

8. Jaguar 

It’s a British multinational car manufacturer brand headquartered in Whitley, England, owned by the Indian company Tata Motors since 2008. And this is a brand whose name precedes its reputation. Jaguar is renowned worldwide for manufacturing some of the most premium cars in the segment. 

9. ITC 

ITC, or the Imperial Tobacco Company, has its headquarters in Kolkata. Making it to the top 2000 Forbes list of best companies, ITC has brands in most sectors one can think of. From cigarettes to clothing to  hospitality, ITC hs its name etched on the minds of Indians as well as overseas. 

10. Airtel 

Bharti Airtel Limited is an Indian multinational telecommunications services company headquartered in New Delhi. Operating in around 20 countries, it has the fourth largest subscriber base in the world.  

Recently, the new age Indian brands like Oyo and Zomato have also made its way to several countries across the Indian borders. Let’s hope that the next Google, Apple or Facebook, is something desi, something Indian.
