Belts: How To Choose The Right One?

If you want to look stylish and harmonious, then you necessarily need to know how to wear a men’s belt correctly. So, in this article we are going to speak on what types of belts exist, how to choose them and how to wear them.

Different types

Men’s belts can be of several types: for trousers, casual and universal, and each of them has its own characteristics.

  • Belt for trousers

The first type is considered to be a classic. As a rule, it is made of leather, and its width is about 3-3.5 centimeters. The buckle is usually restrained, without any decorations, in the form of a square or rectangle. The color of this accessory can vary from burgundy to blue or black. By the way, it is worth noting that it must necessarily be combined with a bag and shoes. Harmony is the main principle for wearing classical belts: the less it stands out, the more correctly it is matched to the suit.

  • Belts for jeans

The next type is a belt for jeans, that you can often find in a casual style. For the manufacture of this product, both leather (rough processing can be combined with other materials), and fabric are used. Buckles can be made in a variety of styles: with inscriptions and drawings, and the belt itself can be decorated with additional stitches or rivets. The color scheme can be monochrome, bright and also extraordinary combinations.

  • Universal belts

Finally, a universal model: it can be used both for trousers and jeans. The width of the product can range from 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. Such belts are usually smooth, without bright details and are made of leather.

How to choose the right one?

Choosing a belt is not an easy task, requiring at least elementary knowledge in this question. So, what should you pay attention to when making a choice?

  1. The first step to the right purchase is to determine what the product will be worn with.
  2. Secondly, we need to choose the material: preference should be given to a leather one, although it depends on the style of clothing.
  3. The next step is color: when choosing a belt, you need to focus on other accessories, their color scheme and design (shoes, bag, strap of the watch). This rule especially applies to suit belts. The color and texture of the casual models should be selected based on the style of the jeans and your own preferences in appearance.
  4. The size of the belt also plays an important role. The width usually depends on the type, but, as for the length, it should cover the waist with a margin of 15-20 centimeters. In addition to this, it should be buttoned at the middle hole, and there should be more than two holes in the stock.

Some people are sure that the belt is exclusively a functional accessory and there is no need to combine it with other wardrobe details. However, if you experiment a little with the color or structure of it, you will see how it changes your look!

What to combine the belts with?

The belts can complement your style or contrast with other details. In the first case, it should be combined in color with other parts of the suit, for example, with shoes – this is very important for strict models. For everyday look, it is enough to combine the color of the buckle with other metal accessories, and the color of the shoes does not have to match. For example, you can wear brown with beige or beige with white – the main thing here is that the accessory fits into the look.

Another option is a bright or unusual in style belt – in this case, build an image around it. Try to choose plain clothes and accessories without patterns: one or two bright spots in the image are enough.

Casual and strict belts can sometimes replace each other. The first are suitable not only for business suits, but also for more strict sports jackets.

When the clothes clearly belong to a certain style, the belt must match. For example, strict belts will look out of place with casual trousers, and casual ones with a business suit will disrupt the serious impression you want to make.

How to determine your size?

Measure the girth of the belt of your trousers – the belt should be 3-5 centimeters longer. If you liked the model of the wrong size or the old one has become too small for you, do not make new holes yourself. They will stand out noticeably, and the belt itself may break at the puncture place – take it to the shoe shop. Pay attention, that a strict one should have a short free end – only a few centimeters of it should peek out from the fastened buckle.
