Directed by Sudipto Sen, The Kerala story is based on a rather sensitive topic. The movie is said to be allegedly based on the real-life incidents of three Kerala women who after being extremely radicalized and converted joined the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. While the story seems heart-touching, many questions have been raised about the factual accuracy of the movie. The movie has also been accused of misrepresentation of the state and the community. Nevertheless, watching the movie from a cinematic standpoint is still a must for cinephiles who have enjoyed movies like Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai. Starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani, the movie is set to release on 5th May 2023 in theatres near you.
2. Afwaah
Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Bhumi Pednekar, Taapsee Pannu and Summet Vyas, Afwaah is a political drama that has grabbed everyone’s attention for its powerful cast ensemble. Written and directed by Sudhir Mishra, the movie deals with how much power a rumour can hold especially in today’s age of social media. It tells the story of how a prominent politician’s life turns upside down when a false rumour about him is circulated online. May might just be Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s month. While the audience enjoys watching him play dark roles, he has claimed to have enjoyed playing the light ones like those in Freaky Ali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Well, he is back with a light-hearted comedy to change our perspectives! Jogira Sara rara is a romantic comedy that also stars Mahaakshay Chakraborty, Neha Sharma and Sanjay Mishra. Directed by Kushan Nandy, the movie is a family comedy with twists and turns that will leave you laughing like there’s no tomorrow. It is scheduled for a theatrical release on 12th May 2023.

The Espionage genre has been a hit among the masses in India. Whether it be Mission Majnu or Ek Tha Tiger, the spies in those movies have gotten much love and respect for the role they have played. We have another spy in the Indian spyverse: Dev Jammwal. Played by Vidyut Jammwal, the character is an esteemed Ib agent who is on a mission to save the nation from grave danger. Based on true events from the 1971 Indo- Pakistan war, the movie is set to release in theatres on May 12! It is considered to be one of the most anticipated Bollywood movies in May 2023.
5. 8 am Metro
8 am Metro is a tender story that traces the blossoming of friendship between two strangers who catch the daily 8 am metro. Starring Gulshan Devaiah and Saiyami Kher, the movie narrates the story in a heart-touching and soft manner and reveals the secrets and pain behind each character. It is set to release on 19th May in theatres near you.
6. Coat
With Sanjay Mishra and Vivaan Shah as the main leads, Coat tells the story of the son of a pig farmer, a young boy from a small village in Bihar who harbours great dreams. The movie revolves around how his father tries his best to fulfil these dreams of his kid. Directed by Kumar Abhishek, the movie will be released theatrically on 26th May 2023.
While 2022 gave us movies that launched names from the Indian film industry into the international scene, 2023 so far has proven to be relatively bland. However, we must remember that the year has not ended and we have much more to go through.
