1. Thai Massage

Starring Gajraj Rao and Divyendu in the leading roles, Thai Massage is truly one of a one-of-a-kind movies. It follows the story of a 70-year-old widow who wishes to attain proper Moksh by fulfilling a desire that he hadn’t had the opportunity to fulfill ever since his wife’s death. This leads him to go to Thailand where he faces many revelations about life. The movie aims at breaking stereotypes surrounding the sexual lives of old people making it a must-watch.

2. Mumbai Mafia- Police vs The Underworld 

As much as Mumbai is the city of dreams, in the 1980s it was also the city of crimes. Mumbai was taken over by underworld dons and gangsters that kept the same charming streets dangerous and deadly at night. This movie is a true crime documentary produced by Morgan Matthews and Sophie Jones and directed by Raaghav Darr and Francis Longhurst. It is a compilation of archived videos and cinematic reconstructions of how Mumbai police tackled the gangsters that plagued Mumbai. It is thrilling and ideal for all crime lovers.

3. Cirkus 

Released towards the end of 2022, Cirkus stars Ranveer Singh, Pooja Hegde, and Jacqueline Fernandes in the leading roles. It is a comedy-drama inspired by Gulzar’s Angoor (1983). It is a silly movie with humor intertwined at every possible corner making it a full-on entertainer. Although the movies received mixed responses, it is worth a watch.

4. Vadh 

Vadh- a historical dive into the etymology of the title itself proves how well thought out the movie is. Known for the stellar performances by Neena Gupta and Sanjay Mishra, Vadh is the story of an old couple who find themselves shrouded in problems that consequently lead to murder. While being a gripping movie, it will also make you reflect on the harsh reality of society towards old people in general.

5. Mister Mummy 

Mister Mummy too is a movie with an unusual plot. Featuring the adorable couple Riteish Deshmukh and Genilia D’souza, the movie explores a completely new topic with a script that will make you chuckle! It wasn’t well received on its theatrical release but like every movie, this movie too deserves one watch, especially for Riteish and Genelia’s acting.

6. Mission Majnu 

We all witnessed the charming Siddharth Malhotra in Shershaah playing the brave soldier Vikram Batra. Well, we have another opportunity to see him in an esteemed role in the movie Mission Majnu. The movie is about a highly covert Indian operation in Bangladesh during the 1970s. While maintaining his charm alongside Rashmika Madanna, Siddarth Malhotra has done an excellent job at playing the role of a secret agent making it one of the best Hindi movies on Netflix in 2023.

7. An Action Hero 

Ayushmann Khurana proves his versatility yet again with this action thriller. The movie follows the story of a retired action hero who finds himself to be in a real-life action sequence when he is accused of murder. The new and unique script of the movie along with the electrifying performances of the entire star cast left the audience in wonder. The movie had a theatrical release in December of 2022 and is now available to watch on Netflix.

8. Bheed 

Bheed is a captivating drama depicting a part of the many problems the country faced during the 2020 lockdown. It subtly includes the dynamism of Indian societies, particularly the North East through vivid characters played by Rajkumar Rao, Bhumi Pednekaar, and Pankaj Kapoor. The movie has a monochromatic scheme which complements the gripping story. While the movie wasn’t a commercial success, it is worth a watch for its brilliant screenplay!

 

 

 

9. Chor Nikal Ke Bhaaga 

An exhilarating suspense drama starring Yami Gautam and Sunny Kaushal in the lead roles, Chor Nikal Ke Bhaaga is probably one of the best Hindi movies on Netflix in 2023. It follows the story of a flight attendant and her boyfriend who plan on stealing diamonds mid-flight to pay off their debt. However, this plan goes awry when the plan gets hijacked too! The mix of two very nerve-wracking plots is what makes the movie as riveting as it is. It is directed by Ajay Singh who also gave us Ittefaq. Both movies are something you shouldn’t miss out on if you are a fan of the suspense genre.

10. Tu Jhoothi Mai Makkaar 

Missed out on one of the biggest Bollywood hits of 2023? Worry not because Netflix has given us an endless opportunity to watch this brilliant rom-com at our own convenience! With Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor as the main leads, the movie tells the story of Mickey and Tinni and their unusual love story. It contains the perfect recipe for Bollywood success as it tells the importance of family in a relationship.

   

11. Afwaah 

Directed by Sudhir Mishra, Afwaah is a political drama that picks up a sensitive topic in today’s world. It highlights the influence social media has in our day-to-day lives that includes the political realm in which things can go horribly wrong very quickly. The movie stars Bhumi Pednekar, Sumit Vyaas, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui and does not shy away from picking up highly stigmatized topics. The movie is thought-provoking making it a must-watch for everyone!

12. Kathal 

Kathal: A Jackfruit Story is a satirical comedy that depicts everything wrong with the Indian judicial and administrative system in an extremely playful manner. The movie delves into the life of a diligent police officer played wonderfully by Sanya Malhotra who takes it upon herself to prove her worth by helping a team of officers investigate a politician’s missing jackfruit. The plot then seamlessly blends into the investigation of a missing girl. It very subtly attacks the problems of gender and caste discrimination in present society and compels the viewer to reflect on the satire later.

13. Lust Stories 2 

After the success of the first part in 2018, Lust Stories is back with another 4 short films that explore the ideas of sex, love, and desire. Each segment of the movie which is directed by a different director tells a unique and unconventional story that makes us realize that love and sex manifest themselves in various forms and dimensions.  The anthology film includes the diverse direction style of Konkana Sen Sharma, Sujoy Ghosh, and Amit Sharma. The performances of Kajol, Vijay Varma, Tillotima Shome, Tammanh  Bhatia, and Neena Gupta in their respective segments are exceptionally well done and deserve due credit.

14. Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway

Written and directed by Ashima Chibber, Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway is a moving story about a mother’s struggle to save her children. No force, no matter how strong can ever take a mother away from her children and this movie is proof of that. It is a dramatized depiction of real-life events involving Sagaraika Bhattacharya and her fight against the Norwegian foster care system. It very carefully deals with the problems migrant women face in foreign countries and their relentless efforts to protect their children at all costs. The performances delivered by each character are splendid and not something you should miss.

15. Khufiya

A gripping mystery thriller about a smart spay agent of an Indian spying agency called R&AW. Her work becomes more tedious and grave when they find that there is a mole in the agency who is selling their national defense secrets to other countries. Now, she has to find out this mole while also tackling her personal life which is becoming more complex as she keeps investigating the case. The movie stars celebrated the actors Tabu, Ali Fazal, and Wamiqa Gabbi among others.

16. OMG 2

It is a sequel to the successful 2012 satirical comedy-drama movie OMG. The sequel is about a Lord Shiva devotee who is also the father of a teenage son. When an inappropriate video of his son goes viral online and his son gets expelled from his school. This man starts questioning his own social stigmas and moral questioning that society has taught him throughout his life. The movie starring Akshay Kumar, and Pankaj Tripathi in prominent roles has got a 7.6 IMDb rating- a must-watch movie.

17. Kho Gaye Hum Kahan

A romance drama about three 20-somethings who are trying to find their footing in life while living in the metro-city  Mumbai. They face heartbreaks, love, ambitions, and all things about life while also tackling social media. This movie has been released on Netflix and got very good reviews as well as an 8.6 IMDb rating. It is a nice movie with a sweet ending and every new generation person will relate to this movie for sure!

18. Dhak Dhak

A drama adventure movie that revolves around four women who are set on a motorbike trip to Ladakh from New Delhi. This movie is not only about the adventures they go on, but their relationship that develops from strangers to friends, and also gives them a chance to help them become stronger in life. A slice-of-life movie that will leave a good aftertaste after the movie ends. The movie stars Ratna Pathak Shah, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanjana Sanghi, and Dia Mirza among others.

19. Sukhee

It is a great life drama film that revolves around the life of a homemaker named Sukhee who is bored with her humdrum life just taking care of her household and family. When one day she gets a chance to go on a reunion of her school. This reunion helps her get to relive her past, make beautiful memories, and realize her potential in life. This is another great slice-of-life movie that stars Shilpa Shetty in the lead role of Sukhee.

20. Jawan 

An action thriller about a man who has a team of women who together have made it their life agenda to right all the wrongs in life and help the poor get justice. He also has an eye on an outlaw, a ruthless businessman who has created fear among many in society and killed a lot of people. The movie has the magic of dance, songs, action sequences, entertainment masala, and Shah Rukh Khan in the main role- a pure Bollywood entertainment by Atlee!
