17 New Hollywood Movies and Shows Releasing in August 2024

Hollywood has plenty of action, and horror to serve you in August. Although MCU has nothing to offer you this month, Sony has decided to introduce you to a new Marvel character! Yup, and be it Alien monsters, weird creatures, or a magical world— everything will be explored in the new Hollywood flicks. 1. Harold And The Purple Crayon | 02 August 

A live-action fantasy comedy movie based on a 1995 children’s book by the author Crockett Johnson. This movie will give you a nostalgic ride (especially the 90s kids) because the story will remind you of the epic Indian TV show ‘Shaka Laka Boom Boom’! The film is about a 4-year-old boy who has somehow found a magical purple crayon with which he can draw anything and it will come alive. I wish I get hold of that purple crayon too!

2. The Instigators | 02 August

A heist comedy thriller starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck in the lead roles of two robbers who have reluctantly joined hands out of desperation— one is a father in need of money, and the other an ex-con who is going back into the business. To not feel guilty, they decide to rob the black money of a corrupt politician. However, they make many mistakes and become the target of many powerful goons, and bureaucrats. As a result, they get help from one of their therapists to save themselves. The film is promising chaos for the two of them and a laughing riot for us.

3. Trap | 02 August 

A mystery thriller that gets darker as we delve deeper into the film. The movie is about a dotting father who takes his teenage daughter to a concert to make her wish come true. However, they realize that the concert is a trap and a serial killer is on the loose. If you want to go to your nearest theatres and watch this sinister film that will give you chills. It features Josh Hartnett, Ariel Donoghue, and M. Night Shyamalan in pivotal roles.

4. Cuckoo | 08 August 

A horror mystery thriller, Cuckoo is set to make you fear the woods so that you never wander into them after dusk. It is about Gretchen, a 17-year-old girl who goes to a resort with his family, one that is situated in the German Alps. However, a sinister family secret is hidden in that place— a horrific one that now targets her. The film has already premiered at SXSW and received many good reviews. An action sci-fi adventure film based on one of the most famous video games, this film is filled with loads of action, adventure, unexpected twists, and extra-terrestrial creatures. Borderlands revolves around a group of misfits consisting of an outlaw, and a team of funny heroes— they are searching for a girl who is missing a key that holds the power to rule the world or even destroy it! 6. It Ends With Us | 09 August 

A romance drama film starring Blake Lively, and Justin Baldoni. The movie tells a love story blooming between Lily Bloom, an ambitious woman who moves to Boston to open her own business. On the other hand, she has a chance encounter with a charming neurosurgeon named Ryle. As their relationship grows deeper, Lilu starts seeing some traits in her lover that remind her of her parent’s relationship— something that deeply scarred her.

7. Jackpot | 15 August 

It is an action comedy that is set in a future where the world is struggling economically. This dark comedy film featuring John Cena, Simu Liu, and Awkwafina is about the story of a ‘Grand Lottery’, a new kind of lottery game in which the participants get a chance to not only win a lottery but also kill the winner before sundown and get away with the multi-billion dollar cash prize and murder— both legally. 8. Alien: Romulus | 23 August 

It is a horror sci-fi film that is a new installment of the popular ‘Alien’ franchise which shows how deadly aliens can be to us humans. A thriller suspense film about a tech billionaire Slater King who befriends a cocktail waitress at his fundraising gala and invites her to a party on his private island. The film which shows the waitress enjoying her dream vacation with Slater and his friends has a secret. And, someone knows it too. Th glorious island, now looks dark and gloomy. She has to come clean and uncover some truths before it’s too late. Blink Twice features Channing Tatum, and Naomi Ackie in lead roles.

10. Kraven The Hunter | 30 August

Kraven The Hunter is an upcoming superhero flick that belongs to the Marvel comics world. Interestingly, earlier, the MCU also tried including his character in the film ‘Black Panther’, but Sony was able to own the rights first! This movie shows a Russian immigrant in the USA—Sergei Kravinoff, who is a brave man and is on a mission to prove himself as the greatest hunter in the world. He is especially known to have a tiff with Spiderman (in the Marvel comic world). It stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead role.

11. The Crow | 23 August

An action fantasy crime film starring Bill Skarsgard and FKA Twigs in the lead roles of soulmates Eric and Shelly who are brutally murdered by some villainous powers. The movie sets things into a darker shade when the jilted lovers travel the path between the worlds of death and life to avenge their killers. A dark fantasy movie, The Crow is a modern take on the Graphic novel by James O’Barr on which a movie with the same name was also released in 1994.

12. The Union | 16 August 

An action comedy thriller film starring Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg centers around a man named Mike, who is an honest construction worker. His average working life takes a one-eighty-degree turn when some spies and agents who are on a secret mission enter his life. And all this happens when his childhood sweetheart crosses his path and asks him to work on a US secret intelligence mission. From a waged worker to an action-packed Tom Cruise life— Mike’s life really gives him a stylish surprise!

1. A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder | 01 August | Netflix

Based on the Bestseller young adult crime mystery novel ‘A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder’ is a fun, thrilling, and lovable concept majorly focused on tween girls. The series is about a young 17-year girl named Pippa Fotz Amobi aka Pip who who goes on a hunt to find out who the real murderer was of high school senior Andie Bell, who was presumed murdered by Sal almost five years ago. 3. Emily in Paris Season 4 Part 1| 15 August | Netflix

4. Only Murders in the Building Season 4 | 27 August | Disney+Hotstar

A 2021 murder mystery series that became an instant hit with its first season. Now, the show is coming back with a fourth season. The show is about three neighbors living in an apartment building, together finding out and solving various murder mysteries. In the upcoming season, the trio of Mabel, Oliver, and Charles are back again with a new case to solve. This show featuring Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short could also witness some exciting guest appearances in the new season.

5. The Rings of Power Season 2 | 29 August | Prime Video

Based on the history of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ Middle Earth created by the acclaimed writer J.R.R Tolkien, this show further takes the story of ‘Hobbit’ and LOTR where an elaborate number of warriors, and powerful characters gather together to ally and create a strong wall against those rising evils of Middle-East who are killed but are now rising once against and with more dark power than before. 5. Terminator Zero | 29 August | Netflix

It is an action-adventure animation movie that was released earlier, but finally, it is available for everyone worldwide on Netflix this upcoming August 29th. The animated series is about a young and fearless warrior who time travels back to 1997 from an apocalyptic future where AI machines, robots, and cyborgs have taken over the world and a few human survivors are trying to live their lives.  This warrior wants to save a scientist from 1997 who could help save the world from this indestructible cyborg.
