Koh Yao Yai: The little-known village in Phuket away from the glitz and glamour of city life

You know whatever they say about random trips being the best trips, that’s true. It isn’t just the random timing that makes a trip memorable, sometimes visiting a random destination also works wonders.

Our little getaway to the foreign land had the most mainstream itinerary until a little box on my search window popped up suggesting this place called Koh Yao Yai. Can’t thank you enough Mr. Internet!

A small suggestion from the Internet restructured our complete plan. Initially, the entire trip revolved around trotting the roads of Bangkok and enjoying the city life. But, one look at this village and we were totally sold.

About Koh Yao Yai

Phuket, a small island in Thailand, attracts tourists from across the globe. The beautiful island is surrounded by a plethora of other small islands–Krabi, Phi Phi and Koh Samui being the most popular ones. But, there’s one little island amongst this beautiful group of islands that not many people are aware about—Koh Yao Yai. Only accessible through water ways, Koh Yao Yai remains a hidden paradise away from the hustle bustle of the tourists. This small village, which is surrounded by sea on all sides, is adorned by a redonkulously beautiful resort called Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort and Spa.

Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort and Spa – a synonym for leisure

As we got off the boat to get on the island, all we could see was this beautiful property and all we could hear was the sound of waves hitting the shore. At this moment, we did not care about anything – the service, the rooms, the food. We were just taken aback by the natural beauty of this lovely little island and how wonderfully a man-made wonder fitted it like a jigsaw puzzle.

We were greeted by the ever-smiling staff of the lovely property and guests of different ethnicities – most of them sunbathing by the sea.

We then made our way to our room, only to be amazed by the views. The spacious room opened to a balcony which had a tub overlooking the magnificent Andaman Sea. This is the kind of place that makes you believe in love, poetry and magic.

Food – Thai blessing

I would be lying if I said we were exhausted after the boat ride to the resort – the ride was nothing short of a blissful adventure. Yet, being avid food lovers, we could not contain the excitement for the interesting sea food Thailand brings to us. Our first meal, and every meal after the first meal, had sea food in abundance. When it did not, Santhiya surprised us with delicious English fare and exquisite fruits. Needless to mention, a pint or 2 of Thai beer before the meals cleansed our palate well.

The Village – A Happy Co-Incidence

A stroll along the beach brought us to a small nearby market will opened us to the opportunity of renting a bike for sightseeing. Rent a bike we did and what followed was a combination of adventure and recreation. Just like the rest of Thailand, Seven Eleven stores are easy to find here. Apart from the departmental store, you can spot a few shops to buy souvenirs. There are several piers to enjoy the beauty of nature, but Santhiya Resort gives you enough of that. A few hours of bike riding around the island is enough to do justice to the place. You can easily spend the rest of your time at Koh Yao Yai basking in the sun on the Santhiya beach.

Thailand is quite rightfully the party capital of Southern Asia. This hidden jewel, however, shows you a different side of it. Not many people know of Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort and Spa. But wthose who do, can hardly forget this beauty for the rest of their lives.
