Legendary basketball players who have been honored with their statue

Having your statue is more than just recognition. It is a real confirmation of how significant the influence of this or that person was, a lifetime tribute to his merits, evidence of his ubiquitous presence in the lives of fans from a particular city. So naturally, it is super-important that the hero can feel universal love rather than believe that he will someday be remembered after his death.

There are quite a few basketball fans. And for these people, the best online casinos, like the pure win app, have created online slots with basketball themes. Thanks to these games, everyone can feel like LeBron!

Kyle Lowry

Toronto fans are okay with their favorite being reflected as a statue. Lowry spent nine years in the city, helped take the title, and is remembered not only for his heel but for the way it helped him fearlessly set up his opponents.

The execution, however, was a letdown. First, the mayor of Toronto declared April 4, 2022, to be Kyle Lowry Day, after which someone (it’s still unclear if the club or the TSN network was involved) rolled out a life-size sculptural image. According to the creators, it was supposed to be a reminder of the pose in which Lauri celebrated the 2019 title, but the townspeople had nothing but laughter at this move. They wondered why Lauri became a boxer, applauded the realistic size of his ass, and wondered why his facial features differed from the prototype.

The statue was rolled around town, but they heard the criticism and needed to permanently install it outside the Scotiabank Arena, as initially intended.

Scottie Pippen

The Fine Art Studio of Rotblatt-Amrany began to gain momentum after Michael Jordan’s Spirit sculpture in 1994. In addition to Chicago, the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Lakers, and many other baseball teams began to appear on the studio’s list of clients. That’s why all the same, Julie Amrany gladly responded to the Bulls’ proposal, who asked her in 2009 to create a statue of Scottie Pippen.

Judging by the fact that Scotty and his family attended the monument’s unveiling on April 7, 2011, he didn’t mind the basic concept.

Chick Hearn

A notable composition in the pantheon of sculptures next to the Lakers’ arena. The club couldn’t help but celebrate the work of the legendary commentator, who has devoted more than 40 years of his life to covering the Californians’ game and had a hand in making sure any news related to them turned into a big event. Chick Hearn is a thorough coverage of every detail of the Lakers game in the radio days and a cloud of nicknames, basketball phraseology, and neologisms in the TV days.

Bill Russell

The legendary Celtics center was much more than just an outstanding player. For this reason, Annie Hirsch, responsible for creating the monument, decided to go beyond the statue alone.

The composition includes a center throwing a pass from his chest; among them are 11 granite pedestals (one for Russell’s championships) with motivational inscriptions. One of these reads, “There is no such thing as other people’s children. They are the next generation of Americans.”

George Mikan

Two statues depicting a hook shot would be too much for the Lakers, and then again, no matter what, center George Mikan made his historical journey as a Minneapolis player.

That’s why, since April 2000, his monument has graced the entrance to Target Center, where the Timberwolves play their home games.

Julius Erving

Dr.J has always been a multifaceted character. He was an ABA and NBA star. He was known as Julius Erving and “Dr. Jay.”

So, it makes sense that he had two statues at once.

  • The first statue, which depicts Erving in flight carrying the ball into the ring, was designed in 1987 by Barney Bright. It was installed two years later at the entrance to Philadelphia’s legendary Spectrum. In 2010, the old stadium was dismantled, and the sculptures were removed.
  • Erving was later returned to its original location after the Xfinity Live! The restaurant was built on the plaza of the defunct sports arena in Philadelphia.

To partially restore justice, a small sculpture of “Dr. J” was installed at the Sixers’ base in Camden in 2018. There, it became part of the so-called Walk of Fame, along which small statues of the most critical players in Philadelphia’s history are placed. Wilt Chamberlain, Hal Greer, Charles Barkley, Billy Cunningham, Maurice Cheeks, and Bobby Jones are among them.

Karl Malone

Karl Malone’s statue perfectly embodied the character and manner of the “Postman” game. There are no basketball rings, shadows of opponents, or other abstractions. Instead, everything is as simple and understated as possible: a man at work.

The goal of sculptor Brian Challis, he said, was to convey the passion and power that the Utah leader showed on the court. The life-size bronze figure of the player depicts Malone in his classic move, a pass to the ring.

Shaquille O’Neal

When the Lakers commissioned Julie Amrani to create a statue of Shaquille O’Neal, she faced a severe problem because the player’s size and manner left her no option but to create something unwieldy.

But inspiration told her the way out. So Amrani created a sculpture that defies gravity. The figure is more than 3 meters high, weighs 680 kilograms, and hangs in the air on a structure imitating a shield. In addition to traditional bronze, wood, steel, and clay were used to make the composition. Shaq’s monument is the most nontrivial and majestic monument cordoning off the entrance to the former Staples Center.

Michael Jordan

When it comes to the players who have defined the development of the NBA as a world institution, very few are mentioned more often than Michael Jordan.

His statue in front of the United Center, dubbed “The Spirit,” stands more than five feet tall.

The monument is based on the canonical movement of Jordan hovering in the air, but beyond that, the details make this work outstanding. In addition to Michael, there are two symbolic figures in the composition. One reaches out in an attempt to block his throw; the other is presented as the face of an abstract observer.
