78-Year-Old Man Joined School to Complete His Education, Walks 3km Daily to Attend Class

It is said that “There is no age limit to learning” and this 78-year-old man from Mizoram proves it. His name is Lalringthara and he walks 3 km daily to go to school and complete his education. At an age when people look out for retirement benefits, this man had the zeal to finish his incomplete schooling.

The Early Life of Lalringthara

Lalringthara was born in the year 1945 in Khuanglenge village in the Champhai district of Mizoram. He lost his father when he was just 2 years of age. This led the family to abject poverty. He had to help his mother in the fields from a very young age. Even then his mother sent him to school. He studied in a school in Khuangleng till 2nd standard. There was a break in his studies since his mother shifted to Hruiakawm village. After 3 years, he was enrolled again in a school in 5th standard but because he had to work in paddy fields with his mother, his education took a back seat.

He even took a job at a church as a guard, which he still holds, to make ends meet. 

Zeal for Learning

Lalringthara always wanted to complete his education but circumstances did not let him. But in the year 2018, after almost 70 years, he decided to enroll himself in a school and complete what was left. He studied in New Hruiakawm village till class 8 but could not study further as he realised the village does not have a high school. 

But his determination took him to a local Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan High School. The authorities were surprised at first but enrolled him in class 9. Now, at the age of 78, Lalringthara goes to school by walking 3 km daily. According to him “ Age will not deter me from pursuing knowledge.”. He wants to learn English and is working to do so.

 

This is what inspiration looks like. People like Lalringthara are the reason why others can hope to achieve their dreams. Lalringthara did not provide a manifesto and dateline for achieving your dreams. He simply had one and pursued it no matter the age. This just proves your destination will not cease to exist after a certain age. You might be late but your destination will be waiting for your arrival. Your dreams are waiting to be fulfilled. Circumstances might not give you a chance, but you get to decide when you wanna choose yourself.
