Bollywood produces several movies all year around and the movies that we saw in 2023 so far- have delighted us, amassed us, and even disappointed us. Now, the hit movies are so easy to identify, but we often forget those movies that failed to hit the mark- even though they were created with a lot of hard work. Indian cinema is taking notes from movies that don’t go as planned and are therefore not liked by the viewers (some of them even give us a headache!). 1. Kuttey | 13 January 2023
This multistarrer action crime movie tells the story of a group of gangsters, revolutionaries, and corrupt politicians coming together to formulate a plan and loot a vehicle transporting crores of money. The movie was released on a winter weekend and that too against big South Indian movies like Varisu, and Thunivu. The movie’s thrilling storyline and a team of versatile actors like Tabu, Radhika Madan, Konkana Sen Sharma, and Arjun Kapoor also didn’t seem to impress the audience.
2. Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat | 3 February 2023
Touted as Anurag Kashyap’s biggest flop, this romance drama revolves around the life of two people who are rebellious and young- and fall in love with each other. But, their worlds are poles apart, and their love- is forbidden. The movie wanted to showcase the difference between the two cultures and their clash in modern times to create a timeless classic movie. However, despite all attempts, the movie couldn’t create an emotional connection and relativity with the audience and did not get a good reception.
3. Shehzada | 17 February 2023
Mostly, Bollywood considers a remake of a superhit South Indian movie a sure-shot formula- right? Well, this movie proved it wrong! The movie was a remake of the superhit Allu Arjun-starter Telugu movie, Ala Vaikunthpurramuloo’. However, the movie’s songs and the hit Jodi of Kartik Aryan- Kriti Sanon also couldn’t save it. This Rohit Dhawan directorial got only a 4.5 rating on IMDb.
4. Selfiee | 24 February 2023
A movie starring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi, it tells the story of a fan who butted heads against his favorite superstar over a driving license issue. The movie was a remake of the superhit Malayalam movie, Driving License. While the concept was good and the actors did their best- the movie tanked at the box office. The movie took humor more seriously instead of highlighting the main issue that the original movie raised. The movie added to the list of several other Akshay Kumar movies that did not do well this year.
5. Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan | 21 April 2023
This family entertainer is filled with many songs, drama, and action sequences. However, the movie was criticized for its poor storyline, and many plotholes, and some even regarded the movie as senseless! It revolves around the story of Bhaijaan (Salman Khan) who is a dotting brother to his three younger siblings and vows never to marry anyone to take care of his family until the woman of his dreams arrives. There are of course villains, fighting sequences, romance songs, and family drama. So, if you are a Salman Khan fan- this movie is for you (otherwise not!). Despite having an ensemble star cast the film failed to impress many viewers.
6. Afwaah | 5 May 2023
It is a thriller drama that shows how a chance meeting between a rising politician and an advertising professional gives rise to several unfiltered rumors. The movie wanted to show the consequences of such rumors and how they can upend and shatter the lives of those who are involved in them. Despite excellent performances by the leads including Bhumi Pednekar and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the movie did not generate too much interest among moviegoers and only got a 5.6 IMDb rating and an average amount of viewers.
7. Adipurush | 16 June 2023
Some movies create a lot of buzz, but all for the wrong reasons, and Adiupurush was one of them! The movie was criticized by audiences on social media and several online platforms for its wrong portrayal of the epic tale of Ramayana, creating false hope among viewers, and the lousy use of VFX that India has ever seen! The movie did become a part of our meme culture and trended on social media for several days- but garnered backlash from the country and was a big flop at the box office. It even got a poor IMDb rating of 3.4/10.
8. 1920 Horrors of the Heart | 23 June 2023
Vikram Bhatt has produced a plethora of sequels to his hit movie 1920 released in 2008. And, although, none were able to create the success of the original movie- the one that got the lowest rating was the latest release! 1920 Horrors of the Heart tells the story of a young woman who goes back to live with her estranged mother when her father dies, but soon strange things start happening in the house where she shifts. The movie was able to collect more than its budget at the box office but got poor reviews from the audiences as well as critics.
9. Tiku Weds Sheru | 23 June 2023
This rom-com movie had its OTT release in June 2023. The movie trended a lot because of the large fan following of Nawazuddin and Avneet Kaur- however, it did not get many good reviews. It tells the story of a young girl Tiku, who agrees to an arranged marriage with a Mumbai man just so she can pursue her dream of acting. The movie offered nothing new, the chemistry between the lead pair seemed off, and the ultimate result was a poor rating and not-so-good reviews.
